15-year-old boy arrested for insulting Zambian president

Zambian police arrested a teenager for insulting President Edgar Lungu on Facebook. The 15-year-old boy was charged for defaming the president, which attract three years in prison.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with defamation of the president, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

Police spokeswoman Esther Katongo accused him of creating a Facebook page using the name “Zoom” to post defamatory or insulting statements about Mr. Lungu.

The boy, originally from Kapiri Mposhi, in the central province of Zambia, is expected to appear in court shortly.

In 2015, President Lungu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to respecting fundamental human rights and freedoms as enshrined in the International Bill of Rights and Zambia’s constitution, during the commemoration of the UN International Human Rights Day in Lusaka.

AT the event, the president called for self-restraint in exercising freedom of speech and expression, adding that it will respect and protect the rights and freedoms of others.
