Burkina Faso breaks diplomatic ties with Taiwan

In Burkina Faso, the government has broken off diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs explains that this decision is guided by the protection of Burkina Faso’s interests.

In a statement read in less than two minutes, the Burkinabe Foreign Minister explains that the evolution of the world and the socio-economic challenges recommend that his country reconsider its position with Taiwan.

Burkina Faso thus breaks its diplomatic relations with this state after 24 years of cooperation.

“The government of Burkina Faso, decides as of today to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan. This decision is guided by the strong will of the government to defend the interests of Burkina Faso and its people in the concert of nations and to form the best partnership in order to consolidate the economic and social developments of our country and to facilitate regional and sub-regional projects,” said the minister.

Taiwan’s ambassador to Ouagadougou has been officially informed. According to Alpha Barry, the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, the necessary arrangements will be made for the closure of his country’s embassy in Taipei and that of Taiwan in Burkina Faso.
