Chess legend Magnus Carlsen lifts record of highest number of unbeaten

Chess legend Magnus Carlsen (29) has set a record series of undefeated matches. The Norwegian has not lost more than 113 games, although he thinks he only has 111 games. But that too is a record.

Actually, world champion Carlsen had already improved Sergej Tiviakov’s record of 110 games without defeat in the fourth round of the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. But the Norwegian chess legend did not count two victories he had booked against Norwegian amateurs because of their low rating.

However, last night he also broke the record according to his own ‘count’. He has been working on the impressive series for a year and a half. In July 2018, Magnus Carlsen lost his last time in Biel, Switzerland. Since that defeat against Mamedyarov, the counter stands at 113 classic games without a loss. He won 36 times and played 77 draws (undecided).

After a very dry draw with Fabiano Caruana, his challenger in the 2018 World Cup match, the chess legend Carlsen saw no reason to really celebrate the scoop yesterday.

Previous record holder Tiviakov reacted cynically to the hype surrounding his broken record from 2005. “I was a record holder for 15 years without anyone showing any interest.”
