Chinese authorities react to xenophobia against Africans

Tension is rising in the Chinese city of Guangzhou due to rumors about the spread of coronavirus. According to African community leaders, hundreds of people are still unable to return home after being evicted from their homes and hotels for fear that the coronavirus will spread to African communities.

The government of Guangdong Province has responded to concerns of discrimination by calling China and Africa good friends, partners, and brothers. However, hundreds of African residing in the city could not return home. They were evicted from their homes and hotels for fear that the coronavirus will spread to African communities.

The government of Guangdong Province said he attached “great importance to the concerns of some African countries and was working quickly to improve” the situation. But many people in Guangzhou are concerned about the treatment given to some of the Africans.

A Nigerian student who requested anonymity said he had been evicted from his home, arrested and quarantined. “Please, we beg the world to come to our rescue. The way the Chinese government treats us is unfair. They arrested and quarantined me and forced me to pay for the hotel,” he declared.

One of them showed a small group of Chinese traders parading in the area where African traders usually gather to protest. They claimed that their business had suffered from the fact that many Africans could no longer trade.

Another video showed a Chinese landlord apologizing to his tenant. “Foreigners can no longer live here; I’m sorry. We have a community management rule. It’s not what you think. We’re going to be fined,” he said.
