Extraordinary story of island where women “go to sea”

This small village of nearly 10,000 souls in Nigeria, not far from Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria, designed by the English settler as a breakwater to protect Lagos, is a boon for the hundred or so boats waiting to land their goods in a port of Lagos.

Lagos state is among the most congested state in the world. The particularity of this island? Women are very numerous and men are absent because of work in the capital.

As a result, a fruitful trade of fresh flesh develops between the sailors on the boats and the women of the village, in an incessant ballet of pirogues, a modestly veiled activity of the word, “the women go to the sea”!
