Ghana: They steal a phone and get 25 years in prison
Tears fell on Patrick Frimpong’s face when he and his friend Charles Miraku were sentenced to a total of 25 years in jail for stealing an Itel mobile phone.
Frimpong and Miraku, both aged 20, were sentenced to 15 years and 10 years respectively on Tuesday, July 10 by Mgr Afi Agbanu after pleading guilty to theft.
According to DSP VK Dosoo, on May 5, 2018, around 11:15pm in Atico, Accra, Frimpong and Miraku, both workers, attacked peaceful citizens who were returning home.
A witness at the scene testified to the court that the convicts attacked their victims and asked them to bring their phones and money. And to add that they have only managed to seize the mobile phone Itel of a certain Amidu evaluated at 300 GH cedi before fleeing.
A police patrol team then arrested Frimpong and Miraku after Amidu shouted for help. It was later discovered that one of the convicts (Miraku) had hidden a pistol on him during the flight.
In delivering his verdict, Bishop Agbanu claimed that Frimpong had been sentenced to the most severe penalty (15 years) because he had pointed a knife at the victims including Patricia Mensah and Shamzetu Amidu during the assault.
