HIV/AIDS: Discover this African country where children are most affected

Nigeria has been ranked among the countries in the world where the number of cases of HIV/AIDS transmission between mother and child is highest.

According to the Nigerian federal government, local and international indications have confirmed that Nigeria produces 30% of children born with HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, briefed reporters on the launch of a roadmap for national treatment implementation and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He added that this would require collective action by all stakeholders, with the support of global partners, to make corrections to this statistic.

Professor Isaac Adewole also confirmed that Nigeria currently has 3.1 million people living with the virus, of which 1.1 million have been treated appropriately and in a timely manner by the government.

He was extremely pleased with the commitment of the National AIDS Agency (NACA) to patients with the virus.

In his words, the Prof said: “There is no reason for Nigeria to be the largest producer of HIV-infected babies because we have made great efforts in the past. Obviously, more is needed to get more results,” he added.
