Reportedly internet failures in Ethiopia due to exam malpractice

Ethiopians are angry at recent SMS and Internet service failures. The state-owned company Ethio Telecom, the country’s only telecommunications provider, declined to comment on the cuts.

The courier service has stopped since Thursday without any official explanation. According to witnesses, Internet failures began last Tuesday and continue to affect many parts of the country. These cuts coincide with the end-of-year exams.

BBC’s Kalkidan Yibeltal reports from Addis Ababa that some people think that these inconveniences are aimed at preventing students from cheating. A practice widespread in the country according to some people. In 2016 and 2017, the Internet was cut to curb leakage of exam copies in schools.

The Telegram messaging app, which is popular among young Ethiopians, also remains inaccessible.
