Large swimming party in Wuhan where COVID-19 first emerged

In the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan, where the new coronavirus broke out at the end of last year, thousands of people looked for a cool down in the Wuhan Maya Beach water park last weekend.

While ‘normal’ still seems a long way off in other countries, a life without social distancing is being resumed in the Chinese city. This can be seen in photos and videos from the French news agency AFP.

In any case, there is no question of keeping your distance during the mega party in the swimming park, where thousands of visitors enjoyed a techno pool.

The photos show how they float around happily and packed together in yellow and orange inflatable tires. Mouth masks are nowhere to be found. There are performances and electronic music blasts from the speakers.

Wuhan is considered the cradle of the coronavirus. The lung virus first appeared there at the end of 2019.

After being in lockdown for more than two months, the Chinese city has been open again since April 8. Since then, the virus seems to be under control. As of mid-May, no new domestic contamination cases have been reported in the entire Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital.

Several dozen new daily cases have been reported across China in recent days. Despite this, the fear of a new outbreak remains real. In June, a significant alarm was raised in Beijing when a large number of corona infections were detected in four days.
