Libyan Army and Warlord Haftar agree on truce

The Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar agrees to a truce on Saturday. He would sign it in the Egyptian capital Cairo, according to two diplomats.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) of Haftar and the army of the internationally recognized government of Libya have been fighting against each other for some time now.

The armistice will be signed in Cairo by Haftar and a representative of the Libyan government. Egyptian President Abdul Fatah al-Sisi, who assisted in the rapprochement between the two sides, is also there.

Haftar, a Northeast warlord who calls himself Field Marshal, is trying to get the Libyan capital Tripoli entirely in his hands. The UN-recognized government of Fayez al-Sarraj wants to prevent this.

Libya has been in chaos since the death of ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Since then, a power vacuum has emerged in the North African country.
