Lionel Richie makes new version “We Are The World”

In the 1980s, Lionel Richie (70) was one of the drivers behind “We Are The World”. The song raised money to address the famine in Africa. A new version of the song will be released on Sunday evening. Lionel makes it together with former American Idol candidates.

We Are The World was the counterpart to “Do They Know It’s Christmas” in 1985, the song with which British artists raised money for Africa in late 1984 under the direction of Bob Geldof and Midge Ure.

For the new version, Lionel colleagues Katy Perry and Luke Bryan roped in. Together with him, they form the jury of the talent show. Former participants Jordin Sparks, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, and Fantasia also participate. Current participants in American Idol are also allowed to sing along.

Bruce Springsteen

It is the third version of “We Are The World”. After 1985, a new one was made in 2010 to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Lionel Richie wrote, “We Are The World” in 1985 with Michael Jackson. The proceeds went to the United Support Of Artists For Africa (USA For Africa) organization.

Both stars were seen in the clip of the world hit, of course, but most attention was paid to Bruce Springsteen, who partly broke through to the general public. Anyway, thanks to his contribution to the song.
