Nigeria: psychiatric test for new police officers

The Inspector General of Police in charge of training of police revealed this new method during the recruitment process.

The purpose of this psychiatric test is to filter the people who engage in drug use.

For this year alone, more than one hundred and thirty thousand candidates, selected after a preselection, will have to undergo psychiatric tests.

These candidates will also pass HIV test and also pregnancy tests for female candidates.

These tests raise concerns among the population who fear a reduction in the number of potential candidates.

The final recruitment will concern only six thousand people, hence also claims that these tests are also applied to police officers already in office.

Some of these agents have been accused of abuse of power by detainees.

Authorities report a lack of police in a country of about 200 million people.
