North Korea: “No more war thanks to our nuclear weapons”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in a speech that there would be no more war because the country’s nuclear weapons guarantee security and future, state media reports on Tuesday.

Kim made the comments while celebrating 67 years of the 1950-1953 armistice after the Korean War, according to state news agency KCNA.

North Korea has developed nuclear weapons in recent years to gain “absolute strength” to prevent another armed conflict, Kim said in a speech highlighting the defensive nature of the programs.

“Now we are able to defend ourselves against any military threats from imperialist and hostile forces,” he said. “Thanks to our reliable and effective self-defense nuclear deterrent, there will be no more war, and the security and future of our country will be guaranteed forever.”

Negotiations aimed at dismantling Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs in exchange for Washington’s sanctions exemption have been stalled for some time.

Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump first met in Singapore in 2018, raising hopes of ending North Korea’s nuclear threats. But their second summit, in 2019 in Vietnam, and subsequent meetings between the two countries were unsuccessful.
