Prime Minister Tonga calls on female officials to marry

The prime minister of the kingdom of Tonga, an island group in the Pacific, has called on female officials to marry this year. Finding a spouse must be a priority, according to Akilisi Pohiva quoted by the local media.

The prime minister made the suggestion for a meeting and prayer service for the government personnel, in honour of the new year. “I’ve come to realize that there are a lot of well-educated but unmarried women in important positions in our government services,” Pohiva is quoted in the local newspaper Matangi Tonga. “I call you all, please find a husband in 2019!”

It is not the first time that Pohiva makes remarkable statements. In August, he called on the leaders of the other Pacific islands to take part in a raid contest, as an example for their populations. The region has the largest share of inhabitants with obesity in the world.
