Reactions after Trump advises colored Democrats “to return to their own country”

American president Donald Trump is again under attack, this time because he is advising a number of colored Democratic members of the House of Representatives in a series of tweets to “return to their own country”. The four women in question were all born in the United States except one. And they wouldn’t let themselves say it.

The incident is part of the increasing criticism of the US refugee camps. A number of the Democratic members of the House of Representatives, including the popular socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, came to visit the camps and testified in Congress about the appalling conditions. For example, several migrants would suffer from AFTs because they were not fed and a group of women had to drink from a toilet bowl because the sink was broken during their stay.

“Catastrophe”

The American president Donald Trump calls that “fake news”. He addresses the Democrats in a series of tweets. “So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and hateful way, to tell the citizens of the United States, the best and most powerful country in the world, how we should conduct our policy.”

“Why don’t they go back and help clean up the totally broken and crime-infected places they come from,” Trump writes. “Then they can return and show us how it’s done. These places need your help urgently, you cannot leave soon enough.”

Trump never mentions his targets by name but is clearly targeting ‘the Squad’, a nickname for Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the first American Congresswomen with a headscarf.

The four young women represent the progressive flank of the Democratic Party. Of the four, only Omar was born abroad. She emigrated to the US from Somalia and became an American citizen at the age of 17 in 2000. The others have Latin American, Palestinian or African American roots, but all are from the US.

“He is the crisis”

Rashida Tlaib already called the president’s tweets “racist,” and again called for the president to be turned off. “He is the crisis. His dangerous ideology is the crisis. He must be turned off,” she says.

Ayanna Pressley also said: “This is what racism looks like,” she said on Twitter. “We are what democracy looks like. And we’re not going anywhere. Except back to DC (Washington, ed.) To fight for the families that you marginalize every day and make you bad.”

Furious

Ocasio-Cortez then said that the president is “angry” because he “cannot imagine America to which we belong”: “you fall back on a scared America for your pillaging.” She also added that “the country she comes from” is the United States. “And on top of the fact that you do not accept America that has elected us, you cannot accept that we are not afraid of you. You can’t accept that we’re going to expose you and have a positive vision for this country. And that’s what pisses you off.”

The Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders also stood up for the women. He called Trump’s statements racist. Just like Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, who has been in a dispute over the past few weeks with the four Democrats involved. According to her, Trump confirms with his statements that “his plan to make America great again has the real goal of making America white again”. “Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our strength,” she tweeted.

Unacceptable

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, has also condemned Trump’s statements. “She believes that the language used to talk about these women was totally unacceptable,” said the outgoing Prime Minister’s spokesman. Normally, British Prime Minister May is very moderate in her criticism of the US president, who does not spare her at all.

Theresa May’s criticism comes after a turbulent week of diplomacy between the United Kingdom and the United States. The British ambassador in Washington, Kim Darroch, had to resign after a leaked note in which he criticized Trump. The American president soon fired back and called Theresa May’s Brexit policy “a disaster.”
