Reinstatement of Gbagbo and Soro: Ouattara refutes the judgment of African Court

During the press conference that closed his state visit to Marahoué, the outgoing President of Côte d’Ivoire rejected the rulings of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights “ordering” the reinstatement of Laurent Gbagbo Guillaume Soro on the electoral list.

Asked about his reaction after the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights’ rulings “ordering” the reinstatement of former President Laurent Gbagbo and former Prime Minister Guillaume Soro on the electoral roll, President Alassane Ouattara replied that the judgments were null and void.

“This decision, which infringes on our sovereignty (…) is not applicable and will not be applied in Côte d’Ivoire,” the head of state replied.

He noted that of the 54 African countries, only 10 are members, of which four have withdrawn.

Seized by Ivorian opponents, the Court ordered in two judgments the reinstatement of the two Ivorian personalities on the electoral list, also requiring their eligibility to stand as candidates for the presidential election.

Four candidates out of 44 were declared fit to stand as candidates for the presidential election of 31 October 2020, which are; President Alassane Ouattara (RHDP), Henri Konan Bédié (PDCI-RDA), Pascal Affi N’Guessan (FPI) and Kouadio Konan Bertin (independent).
