The son of the former Zambian president imprisoned for theft

The son of Zambia’s former president Frederick Chiluba was jailed for phone theft.

In Zambia, a court sentenced former President Frederick Chiluba’s son to eight months’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a mobile phone.

Frederick Chiluba Jr. was convicted of stealing a $843 Samsung S7 Edge last year.

The court heard that Chiluba Jr. stole the camera phone from a woman, Brenda Chisha, on September 2, 2017, and sold it for drugs in a slum in the Zambian capital, Lusaka.

In rendering his judgment today, Lusaka magistrate Nthandose Chabala said that she had given Chiluba Jr a custodial sentence as a deterrent to him and to other potential offenders.

She said that she was convinced that there was enough evidence linking him to the theft of the phone.

Frederick Chiluba led Zambia from 1991 to 2001.

He was prosecuted for corruption charges, which deprived him of any legal proceedings after he left office.

He was prosecuted for embezzlement alleged in 2002 but was acquitted after a six-year trial.

In 2007, he was convicted of fraud by a London court and ordered to repay $58 million ($36 million) in hijacked funds, but the decision was never enforced in Zambia.
