South Africa reopening places of worship

Places of worship will be reopened in South African after President Cyril Ramaphosa says the faithful must keep their distance, wear masks and disinfect their hands.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the reopening of places of worship on June 1 with strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Churches, mosques, temples, and other recognized places of worship will have to do what is necessary to ensure that the faithful keep their distance. A maximum of 50 people will be allowed to attend, depending on the size of the room or building.

All the faithful must wear masks and disinfect their hands. President Ramaphosa recognized the role played by religious leaders in the community, including advice and prayers.

He said the pandemic had wreaked havoc on the religious well-being of many, hence the need to reopen places of worship as the country moves toward what the government has described as level three easing containment restrictions.

The places of worship closed their doors last March. Some religious leaders have disseminated online services.

South Africa has so far recorded 24,264 cases of coronavirus – the highest number on the continent – and 524 people have unfortunately died from the virus.
