Ten soldiers killed by jihadists in northeastern Nigeria

On Monday in northeastern Nigeria, ten soldiers were killed by jihadists in two different incidents. Sources within the emergency services have reported this.

During an attack by jihadists on a military convoy near the village of Kumulla, in the state of Borno, eight soldiers were killed.

A few hours after that attack, two other soldiers died in the same state in a fight between an army patrol and a group of jihadists in the village of Kolore.

A week ago, 35 Nigerian soldiers were also killed in the same region, and 30 others were reported missing.

Hundreds of soldiers have already died

According to the Nigerian army, the northeast of the country is no longer the scene of violence by jihadist groups. Yet, hundreds of soldiers have been killed in recent years by similar attacks by the Islamic State group in West Africa (ISWAP), a splinter group of Boko Haram. This group has been exceptionally active since its inception in 2016 and also regularly attacks NGO staff.

Since 2009, more than 36,000 people have been killed in violence in northeastern Nigeria. More than 2 million people are still on the run.
