The US Senate is shutting down shutdown until the end of February

The US Senate has approved a provisional fiscal law allowing the US government to avert a so-called shutdown – which threatened just before Christmas. Sufficient public funding is now foreseen until 8 February. The law still has to be approved by the House of Representatives, which would happen today.

Earlier this month, the Democrats and US President Trump had a heated discussion, because the latter demanded that $5 billion be made available in the budget for the construction of the border wall with Mexico. That amount is now again not in the budget. The White House said yesterday that it would look for other ways to finance the border wall.

Without the provisional budget law, the US government would soon be without money and many public services would have to be closed.
