Just 40 grams of pistachios a day will help you lose weight and reduce your waist circumference, but also lower your blood pressure, according to a recent study.
Scientists from the University of California have carried out an experiment with the participation of several dozen volunteers proving the beneficial effects of pistachios.
During the study, published in the journal Nutrients, half of the volunteers consumed 1.5 ounces (around 42 grams) of pistachios per day for four months. Participants in the experiment also increased their physical activity. They received advice on weight loss concerning diet and behavior.
According to the experts, both groups lost about 5% of their body weight and significantly reduced their waist circumference and body mass index (BMI). The “pistachio group” also experienced a drop in blood pressure. This group also had higher levels of antioxidants, such as carotenoids and lutein.
In this context, scientists agree that the calorie content of all nuts is high, but insist that they are a key food in a healthy diet and that it is vital to include them in the menu.
The benefits and dangers
A Russian nutritionist had previously indicated that nuts were an essential source of gluten and good fats, but that it was important to eat them properly.
In addition, nuts can be dangerous for those who suffer from allergies, gout, and gastrointestinal problems.
