United Nations worries about Boko Haram attacks

The Islamist group remains very active despite the non-stop attack that the Nigerian army is giving them. The United Nations is seriously concerned by a series of attacks by the Boko Haram jihadist group in northeastern Nigeria, which have reportedly killed 40 people in recent days.

The UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, called on the government and security forces to do more to protect communities. Kallon also urged Nigerian authorities, including those in Kaduna State, to investigate last week’s clashes in the Kasuwan Magani region, which killed more than 50 people. Kaduna state governor Nasir Ahmad El Rufai said the prosecution of 25 people arrested for violence will be stepped up.

Boko Haram was founded in 2002 and launched military operations in 2009. His insurrection left thousands dead and millions displaced, mainly in the north-east of the country. The Islamist group has also extended its activities to neighbouring countries including Cameroon and Niger.
