US midterms election: Facebook blocks suspicious accounts

The social networking site Facebook has blocked 30 Facebook accounts and 85 Instagram accounts, possibly linked to “coordinated suspicious behaviour”.

The company says it has been informed by the FBI on Sunday of possible online activities by foreign entities. In one day of the ‘midterms’, the mid-term parliamentary elections in the US, the company took no risks and blocked the profiles, it says.

Facebook still has to investigate whether there are effectively foreign groups behind the accounts. The company claims to have regular contact with the authorities and with external experts around the world, since there are suspicions of Russian interference in the previous presidential elections in the US.
