Outcry after the participation of naked singers in a school competition
With the encouragement of the public, girls danced and sang topless, with a simple loincloth covering only their sex, according to a video filmed this week in the Eastern Cape province (southeast).
“There is no reason for students to go on stage completely naked(…) it’s totally inappropriate on the part of teachers,” said Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
“This is all the more disturbing as women and girls are increasingly seen as sex objects intended to entertain men,” she added.
South African society is one of the most violent in the world, especially for women.
A hundred rapes are recorded every day and a woman dies under the beatings of a loved one every eight hours.
The Minister of Education also denounced “the commentators” who justified the bare appearance of singers claiming that “it was part of the culture of young women.”
“There is no reason for these children to be completely naked, and this attack on human dignity goes against the values of our cultures,” said Angie Motshekga, who demanded investigation and punishment.
In South Africa, it is not unusual for young women, often virgins, to perform bare breasts as part of traditional dances.
Former President Jacob Zuma, who was forced to resign in February because of his involvement in several corruption scandals, frequently participated in these events, which celebrate Zulu culture.
